4,000 immigrants reach Italy by boat in 48 hours – as minister calls for EU help

Boats from Africa and Middle East are arriving at the fastest rate since a naval operation to handle influx began last year

Italy says 4,000 immigrants have reached its shores by boat in the past two days – the highest number since it began a naval operation to handle the influx after two shipwrecks last year.

"The landings are non-stop and the emergency is increasingly glaring," the interior minister, Angelino Alfano, said. "Right now two merchant ships are rescuing two boats with 300 and 361 people aboard. It appears there's at least one corpse on board." Alfano estimated that 15,000 migrants crossing the Mediterranean had been rescued so far this year.

He claims up to 600,000 people from Africa and the Middle East are ready to set off from Libyan shores. "Europe must take the situation in hand. It cannot say that, having given €80m (£66m) to Frontex, the problem has been resolved," he said, referring to the European Union's border control agency. "There are death merchants who profit from this people-trafficking and who send out requests for help just 30 to 40 miles after leaving the Libyan coasts."

Italy began its naval operation after more than 400 migrants from Eritrea and Syria perished in twin tragedies off Italian shores in October 2013.

Five navy ships are currently operating in the region south of the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, which has become one of the biggest gateways for irregular migration into the European Union. Italy said it had rescued around 2,500 of the 4,000 arrivals and that others were being intercepted by merchant ships and coastguard vessels.

This is the highest number over a 48-hour period since the naval operation began, a spokesperson said. Italy reported a 60% increase in asylum claims last year – mainly people fleeing the war in Syria – although numbers of arrivals are still lower than after the Arab Spring revolts in 2011.

The latest increase comes just ahead of European parliament elections next month. The anti-immigration Northern League – a small opposition party – was quick to weigh in on the issue, urging Alfano to stop the arrivals "by turning them back". But Silvia Canciani, a spokeswoman for the Association for Legal Studies on Immigration, played down the scale of the new influx.

"The number of people arriving is increasing, but it is only becoming an emergency because of the bad management of Italy's asylum system," she said. She said the new arrivals would probably be taken to private accommodation such as hotels "because there is no more space" in Italy's asylum and immigration centres, warning that vulnerable migrants such as minors risked not receiving the care they needed.

"This is very similar to the North Africa emergency in 2011. The Italian government is repeating the same mistakes," she said.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS USD/JPY 04/10/14

 1 Hour Intraday Trading

The last three trading days the USDJPY managed to stop the bullish momentum, Bears won the last battle and created a downward trend line (T) with a move of 255 pips. The last hours the price has been consolidating (blue channel) trying to find a way out either breaking above or below.

SCENARIOS

If price breaks below of the low boarder of the channel then most possibly will also test S2 Level, a support that is valid from February 4 of 2014, and a break below of this level will alert a very strong bearish momentum possibly with a move that will approach the 100 level.
Now a possible break out above the channel which also means that price will also have managed to penetrate the trend line and will alert a temporary win of the bulls heading the price towards the R2 Level at 102.64

Angela Merkel approves Germany's first minimum wage

Angela Merkel approves Germany's first minimum wage

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has approved the country's first minimum wage, at 8.50 euros an hour (£7; $11.75), to start in 2015.

At the moment, the country is one of seven in the 28-nation EU without a minimum wage level. Germany has relied on trade unions and business groups to fix pay instead. Mrs Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats approved the change as part of a power-sharing deal with the Social Democrats (SPD). The SPD was in favour of the move, but the conservative CDU and CSU parties had been keen to keep the status quo.
'Workers' dignity back'
Parliament is expected to debate the proposal this summer. It will then move to the upper house for approval in September. Economists said higher wages in Europe's biggest economy could help people spend more and stimulate the economy, promoting economic growth.
The SPD's labour market policy spokesperson, Katja Mast, said: "Labour has got its dignity back with a fair payment of 8.50 euros, whether in the East or West and with no industry exceptions." But the wage does not cover minors, interns, trainees or long-term unemployed people for their first six months at work.

Some employers, such as those using temporary or seasonal, workers, will have two years to phase in the new minimum wage. For the rest of Germany's employers, the regulations will come into effect on 1 January 2015. The wage will be reviewed annually from 1 January 2018.

LinkedIn email addresses exposed by plug-in software

LinkedIn email addresses exposed by plug-in software

The email addresses of LinkedIn users can easily be exposed via a web browser add-on tool, it has been revealed.

Sell Hack is available as a free extension to the Chrome browser that, once installed, will pop up a "hack in" button on LinkedIn profiles.
Users can then find the email address associated with the account even if they are not connected. LinkedIn said it was taking legal action over the plug-in and advised users to uninstall it.
Since receiving a cease and desist letter from LinkedIn, SellHack has disabled the plug-in. "We are building a better product that does not conflict with LinkedIn's terms of service," it said on its blog. Previously it had insisted that the tool was created for marketing professionals and that all data is publicly available.

On its website it said: "We just do the heavy lifting and complicated computing to save you time, We aren't doing anything malicious to LinkedIn." But the social network for professionals did not agree. "We are doing everything we can to shut Sell Hack down.
On 31 March LinkedIn's legal team delivered Sell Hack a cease-and-desist letter as a result of several violations," a spokesman told the BBC. "LinkedIn members who downloaded Sell Hack should uninstall it immediately and contact Sell Hack requesting that their data be deleted." He said that members should "use caution" before downloading any third-party extension or app.
"Often times, as with the Sell Hack case, extensions can upload your private LinkedIn information without your explicit consent," he said.

Facebook buys virtual reality headset start-up for $2bn

Facebook has announced it will buy Oculus VR, a Californian company which specialises in virtual reality products, for around $2bn (£1.2bn).

The start-up's flagship product, the Oculus Rift, is a goggle-like "immersive" headset for video gaming. It was developed with funds raised through crowdfunding site Kickstarter, and subsequent investment. Facebook's boss, Mark Zuckerberg, said Oculus' technologies could "change the way we work, play and communicate". The Oculus Rift has yet to be released, but more than 75,000 orders for development kits have already been placed, according to the social media giant.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Facebook said it plans to expand the use of Oculus technologies to include "communications, media and entertainment, education and other areas". Oculus' crowdfunding campaign raised $2.4m (£1.5m), 10 times the amount originally sought. It subsequently received a further $75m from investors.

The Rift headset was widely heralded at the CES technology show in Las Vegas in January, where Sony also announced a rival product. The deal includes $400m in cash and just over 23 million Facebook shares, valued at $1.6bn. Oculus employees will also receive an additional $300m if the company achieves certain targets.

Commenting on the deal, Mr Zuckerberg said: "Mobile is the platform of today, and now we're also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow." It is the latest purchase for Facebook, which last month spent $19bn on mobile messaging platform WhatsApp.
5 Steps to Execute a Site Redesign without Compromising SEO

You've spent years investing in SEO, and now your company dominates the rankings, but your site is outdated, isn't mobile-friendly, and you know it's time for a redesign. You've heard all the horror stories of how a site redesign can kill rankings, so you've held off as long as you can, but now it's time.
Here are five steps to ensure that you are able to successfully execute your site redesign without compromising months or possibly years of investment in SEO.

Step 1: Evaluate Your SEO Strategy

A site redesign is the perfect time to evaluate your SEO strategy and figure out which keywords and landing pages are providing the most value, and which ones are providing the least. This will allow you to know which keywords and landing pages to prioritize during the redesign.
During this process, you may find keywords that rank well, but perform poorly at delivering quality traffic. These keywords may not be worth including in your post-redesign SEO efforts, which presents a great opportunity to refine the keywords you're targeting to ones that will drive higher quality traffic to the site.
When evaluating your SEO strategy, you may also find that certain landing pages fail to engage visitors and convert them into leads or sales. A site redesign presents the perfect opportunity to address page level engagement and conversion issues as well.
Ironically, by evaluating your SEO efforts prior to a site redesign, and addressing issues that you may have otherwise overlooked, you can actually end up with a better performing SEO campaign after the redesign.

Step 2: Keep the Same URL Structure or Implement 301 Redirects

As it pertains to SEO, it is ideal to maintain the same URL structure when executing a site redesign, but this not always practical. You may be moving the site to a new platform that requires a different URL structure, or you may have reorganized your content, which resulted in changes to the URL structure. In any case where changes to the URL structure are necessary, implementing page level 301 redirects is a necessity.
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. It helps retain rankings by guiding search engines from the old URL to the new URL where the requested content now lives. 301 redirects also preserve inbound links and internal links, both of which also help retain rankings.
Retaining a positive user-experience is just as important as retaining good rankings. By preserving inbound links and internal links, 301 redirects prevent visitors from being greeted with a "404 Not Found" error message when accessing the site through inbound links or navigating the site through internal links that point to URLs which no longer exist.

Step 3: Maintain On-Page Optimization

Maintaining on-page optimization is an obvious step, but a site redesign can often involve moving, revising, and adding new content, so with all these moving parts it's easy to forget the basics.
Use this as an opportunity to not only maintain, but to improve on-page optimization, beginning with making sure any keyword changes that were made in step 1 are incorporated into the appropriate pages.
Then, review each title and description tag. Make sure they're unique for each page, incorporate the target keyword(s) for that page, and accurately describe the content they're associated with.
Review the site's URLs, and make sure they're optimized for each page. Also, check for broken internal links, and review all anchor text to make sure it is consistent with any keyword changes that were made in step 1.

Step 4: Create HTML and XML Sitemaps

Create HTML and XML sitemaps to help search engines discover any new content and existing content that has moved to new URLs. HTML sitemaps are also useful to site visitors, and help them discover new content or existing content that has been moved as well.
After creating an XML sitemap, be sure to submit it to the major search engines to expedite the crawling of any new or moved content. This step, combined with page level 301 redirects will ensure efficient crawling and indexing of new or moved content.

Step 5: Monitor, Measure, Improve

Once the redesigned site goes live, carefully monitor your rankings and traffic data.
·         Are rankings improving or getting worse?
·         Is traffic to the site increasing or decreasing?
·         Are visitors engaging more or less with the site's content?
·         Are visitors converting at a higher or lower rate?
A site redesign should not be a once and done project. Just like any other marketing effort, the results of your redesign should be monitored, measured, and improved over time.

Conclusion

By following these five steps, you can not only successfully redesign your website without compromising SEO efforts, but can use it as an opportunity to make your SEO strategy even better.
